Saturday 7th July 2018NORTHAMPTONSHIRE – RED KITES & PURPLE EMPERORS
The Royal Forest of Rockingham in Northampton was a medieval hunting forest but now many years later it attracts butterfly enthusiasts from all over the country!
The Oak and Ash woodlands are home to our main target - Purple Emperor. With some patience and a little slice of luck we hope to see them on the ground as they take minerals from the paths.
We will search the woodland which is home to White Admiral, Purple and White-letter Hairstreaks and Silver-washed Fritillary whilst Common Buzzards and Red Kites drift overhead.
After lunch at the Fermyn Woods country park centre we head off to several dense stands of Blackthorn in search of Black Hairstreak. Their flight period is only two to three weekends so hopefully we will have timed their emergence just right!
