Canvey Island – Seawatching & Migration Special

Wednesday 6th October 2021

We spend the morning overlooking the Thames Estuary in search of seabirds and waders that have pushed into the estuary on northeasterly/easterly winds. Species we hope to see may include Arctic and Great Skua and Northern Gannet plus the chance of shearwaters, petrels or gulls such as Sabine’s. Canvey is probably the best site in Essex to see Long-tailed Skua so we will keep our fingers crossed! During the afternoon we drive the short distance to West Canvey Marshes RSPB reserve where wildfowl numbers will be building and passerines such as Northern Wheatear and Whinchat are still possible. Red-backed Shrike and Eurasian Wryneck have been recorded from this area in recent years.
