This is a trip to one of the best areas in North Norfolk to find the exciting wintering species that occur. We will spend the morning at Holkham National nature reserve where we hope to see large numbers of Pink-footed Geese. On previous tours we have also seen Eurasian and Greenland White-fronted, Dark-bellied and Pale-bellied Brent, Barnacle, Tundra Bean, Ross’s and Snow Goose as well as Black Brant. Huge numbers of geese on the marsh attract the attention of raptors such as Peregrine Falcon, Common Buzzard, Red Kite and both Hen and Western Marsh Harriers which provide an amazing sight as they disturb the geese!
The shallow, sandy Holkham Bay area regularly harbours Snow Buntings and in some winters, a small number of Horned Lark are seen in the open bay with Eurasian Skylarks. The rough grassland at the western end often produces Western Barn Owl and in some years, Short-eared Owl and Rough-legged Buzzard are present, also it is a great place to see Grey Partridge.
After lunch we move to an area of saltmarsh which holds a small Hen Harrier roost and with luck we will see a majestic grey male coming in over the saltings as the light falls. Other species may include Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, Western Barn Owl and Western Marsh Harrier.
