Spring Birding at Old Hall & Abberton Reservoir

Wednesday 1st May 2024

We will spend the morning exploring the fabulous wetlands at Old Hall Marshes where spring migrants will have arrived in full force. The thickets and reedbeds are home to warblers including Sedge, European Reed, Lesser Whitethroat and Common Whitethroat whilst the pools and scrapes are home to nesting Pied Avocets and Common Redshanks. This is an excellent time of year for rarities and scarcities to turn up including Wood Sandpiper, Black-winged Stilt or Broad-billed Sandpiper!

After lunch we drive the short distance to Abberton Reservoir in search of migrants including Black Tern, Little Gull, Arctic Tern, Common Swift, Eurasian Hobby with a really good chance of Eurasian Spoonbill, Western Cattle Egret, Great Egret, Red-crested Pochard, Garganey and more.
