Simon Wood is a born and bred Essex boy who was raised in the County. Having always lived close to the Essex coast his favourite birding locations are not surprisingly, along the shores and estuaries. His local patch is the Maldon area and his patch list is now 214 species, with self-found birds including Baikal Teal, Ring-necked Duck and Lesser Yellowlegs. He has been involved with the Essex Birdwatching Society Committee for several years, which has included editing the Bird Report and he is currently President of the society.
He is the author of the Birds of Essex (2007). His travels have taken him across Britain and Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America, Asia and Australia.
In addition to birds, he has a keen interest in butterflies and moths, dragonflies and hoverflies; in fact pretty much anything that flies!
