Falsterbo in Southern Sweden is one of Western Europe’s most famous migration hotspots where millions of migrating birds leave Scandinavia in search of winter quarters in Southern Europe or Africa.
During our tour, if winds are favourable, we can expect Western Osprey, Common Buzzard, Red Kite, European Honey Buzzard and by far the most common raptor, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, for which day counts can exceed 1,000! Often the area is constantly alive with migrating birds and the sight is often breathtaking! We have visited this area countless times over the past 15 years and can’t wait to return and experience bird migration at its best.

Taking our flight from London Stansted to Copenhagen we take the Öresund Bridge from Denmark to Sweden and are straight into the heart of fantastic birding country. Our itinerary will be flexible depending on weather conditions and local information. No visit to this area is complete without a visit to the world-famous birding hotspot of Falsterbo and nearby migration watchpoints. In early September European Honey Buzzard, Western Osprey and Eurasian Sparrowhawk predominate, but as autumn progresses, European Honey Buzzard are eventually replaced by Common Buzzard, Red Kite and Eurasian Sparrowhawk with the addition of Merlin, Hen Harrier, Western Marsh Harrier, Eurasian Hobby, Peregrine Falcon and Rough-legged Buzzard. With the right conditions it is a birder’s paradise!
On recent trips we have found Pallid and Montagu’s Harriers, Lesser Spotted, Short-toed Snake and White-tailed Eagles and Black Kite. But it’s not just raptors – the air is often full with the calls of Tree Pipit, Eurasian Siskin and Western Yellow Wagtail. If we are lucky, it might be a Nutcracker year when hundreds of Spotted Nutcracker leave Sweden in search of food.
We visit various coastal sites where in the past we have seen Kentish Plover, Caspian Tern, Red-backed Shrike, Black Woodpecker and Thrush Nightingale as well as the more common migrants.
During the afternoons we head inland to good sites where we should see Eurasian Eagle Owl, White Stork, Golden and White-tailed Eagles, Northern Goshawk, Hawfinch and Black Woodpecker with the possibility of Common Crane migrating south overhead.
