BIRDS & BUTTERFLIES OF NORTHERN GREECE & SOUTHWEST BULGARIA

Tue 7th - Tue 14th May 2024

It was so good to return to this wildlife-rich area after an absence of several years and boy was it great!

The tour was centred around Lake Kerkini in Northern Greece where the variety of habitats were home to some great species including LEVANT SPARROWHAWK, BLACK-HEADED BUNTING, EASTERN OLIVACEOUS WARBLER, RED-FOOTED FALCON, SYRIAN WOODPECKER, EUROPEAN HONEY BUZZARD, SQUACCO HERON, LITTLE BITTERN, LESSER SPOTTED WOODPECKER, LESSER GREY SHRIKE, BLACK-NECKED GREBE, EUROPEAN BEE-EATER, PYGMY CORMORANT, LESSER SPOTTED EAGLE, WHISKERED & BLACK TERNS plus DALMATIAN and GREAT WHITE PELICANS.

Excursions were made to the surrounding rocky and wooded hills of Greece and Bulgaria where EURASIAN EAGLE-OWL with a chick was a highlight plus OLIVE-TREE WARBLER, WESTERN ROCK NUTHATCH, BLUE ROCK THRUSH, MASKED SHRIKE, MONTAGU’S HARRIER, EUROPEAN ROLLER, GRIFFON VULTURE, ORTOLAN BUNTING, SEMI-COLLARED FLYCATCHER, EASTERN BLACK-EARED WHEATEAR, EASTERN SUBALPINE WARBLER and EASTERN ORPHEAN WARBLERS were seen.

The fine weather throughout the week encouraged many butterflies to the wing and we managed to find 58 species thanks to our guide Zdravko Kolev (finder of Kolev’s Anomalous Blue!) and these included EASTERN FESTOON, SCARCE SWALLOWTAIL, YELLOW-BANDED SKIPPER, LITTLE TIGER BLUE, LANG’S SHORT-TAILED BLUE, OSIRIS BLUE, EASTERN KNAPWEED FRITILLARY, MOUNTAIN SMALL WHITE, EASTERN WOOD WHITE, SOUTHERN WHITE ADMIRAL, TUFTED MARBLED SKIPPER and lots more.

We also used a Moth trap where a good number of species were found including OAK, SPURGE, SMALL ELEPHANT and ELEPHANT HAWKMOTHS plus PASSENGER, BLAIR’S MOCHA and many more.

All this wildlife with wonderful scenery, accommodation and food plus a fun group made it a pleasure to lead!
