EAST YORKSHIRE – SEABIRDS, MIGRANTS & RAPTOR SPECIAL

Friday 11th - Monday 14th June 2021

Back from our second tour of 2021 and what a great time we had!

Some superb birding throughout the four days with a mixture of habitats visited and ending up with an impressive birdlist.

Some of the highlights of the first day included good views of a singing GREAT REED WARBLER plus RED KITE, WESTERN MARSH HARRIER, CORN BUNTING. A visit to the coast produced ATLANTIC PUFFINS, NORTHERN GANNETS, COMMON GUILLEMOTS and RAZORBILLS amongst others before settling in to our fantastic accommodation for the next three nights.

No visit can be made to East Yorkshire without dropping in to Bempton Cliffs RSPB reserve and we spent our whole second day there! Everyone was treated to good views of EURASIAN TREE SPARROWS all around the reserve but the stars of the show were the seabirds with tens of thousands of birds all in the air at once in amazing light.

There were so many highlights including NORTHERN GANNETS, NORTHERN FULMARS, ATLANTIC PUFFINS, RAZORBILLS, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, COMMON GUILLEMOTS plus a supporting cast of PEREGRINE FALCONS, WESTERN BARN OWL and a great variety of clifftop flora.

A complete change of habitat for our third day as we headed north to Wykeham Forest and the raptor viewpoint at Troutsdale. The day was spent in wonderful sunshine with a huge variety of birds including EUROPEAN HONEY BUZZARDS and NORTHERN GOSHAWK plus RED CROSSBILLS, GARDEN WARBLER, WILLOW WARBLER, EURASIAN HOBBY, EURASIAN SISKIN, EURASIAN BULLFINCHES, COMMON KINGFISHER, GREY WAGTAIL, SPOTTED FLYCATCHER, MANDARIN DUCKS and WHITE-THROATED DIPPER amongst others.

Our final day was spent at the famous Spurn Point and Kilnsea Wetlands where although a little quiet for migrants, we picked up quite a few species such as EURASIAN SPOONBILL, COMMON SCOTER, DARK-BELLIED BRENT GOOSE, NORTHERN WHEATEAR, EUROPEAN GOLDEN PLOVER, DUNLIN, COMMON RINGED PLOVER, EURASIAN WIGEON and small numbers of the delightful LITTLE TERN which rounded off our tour nicely.

Many thanks to the group who made the tour a pleasure to lead, as we enjoyed amazing birding, lovely scenery, great Yorkshire hospitality and fantastic weather.
