It was great to return to the fabulous Isle of Mull for our second tour of 2022.
Our journey northwards was broken by a stop in Teesdale where we found 19 BLACK GROUSE plus RED GROUSE, SPOTTED FLYCATCHER, WHITE-THROATED DIPPER, GREY WAGTAIL, COMMON SANDPIPER and some great wildflowers in the shape of EARLY PURPLE ORCHID, BIRDS-EYE PRIMROSE and SPRING GENTIAN, the latter a very rare species in the UK.
Once on Mull we were unfortunate with the weather but managed to locate all our targets including GOLDEN & WHITE-TAILED EAGLES, HEN HARRIER, SHORT-EARED OWLS, GREAT NORTHERN DIVERS, ATLANTIC PUFFINS, calling CORNCRAKES, MANX SHEARWATERS, TWITE, ROCK DOVE, ARCTIC TERN, GREAT SKUA, BLACK GUILLEMOT, WOOD WARBLER, WHINCHAT plus some non-avian species including EUROPEAN OTTER and SWORD-LEAVED HELLEBORINE amongst others.
The tour concluded with a visit to the RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss where we watched EURASIAN BITTERN, WESTERN MARSH HARRIERS plus a wide range of warblers and other wetland species which we added to our trip lists.
Despite a lot of rain, our group had a great time with lovely food, accommodation, great wildlife and it was good fun to lead!
