Back from our amazing tour to Southern Portugal and it was so good to get away from the cold UK spring! Our two-base tour gave us the opportunity to see the best of Portuguese wildlife.
Our first base was situated on the edge of the Alentejo and ideally situated for all the birding sites. Some of the highlights included GREAT BUSTARDS, BLACK-BELLIED SANDGROUSE, MONTAGU’S HARRIER & both GOLDEN & SPANISH EAGLES. LESSER KESTRELS, LITTLE OWLS, IBERIAN MAGPIES, WESTERN BLACK-EARED WHEATEAR, WHITE-RUMPED SWIFTS, EURASIAN GOLDEN ORIOLES, EUROPEAN ROLLERS, EUROPEAN BEE-EATERS were just a small selection of the amazing birds seen.
It was then down to the coast for a couple of days with saltpans, woodland, sand dunes & freshwater habitats with lots of passage waders moving north including SANDERLING, DUNLIN, GREY PLOVER and RED KNOT in wonderful breeding plumage.
Other goodies included LITTLE BITTERN, KENTISH PLOVER, COLLARED PRATINCOLES, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS, GLOSSY IBIS, AUDOUIN’S & SLENDER-BILLED GULLS, PURPLE HERON, GREATER FLAMINGO’S, IBERIAN GREEN WOODPECKER, EUROPEAN CRESTED TIT, SHORT-TOED TREECREEPER, NORTHERN GANNETS, RED-CRESTED POCHARDS and three RAZORBILLS that were a scarce May species in this part of Portugal!
Dragonflies and Butterflies were seen in good numbers and included SOUTHERN GATEKEEPER, EPAULET SKIMMER, VIOLET DROPWING, EUROPEAN SWALLOWTAIL, SMALL SPREADWING, SOUTHERN BROWN ARGUS and SOUTHERN SPECKLED WOOD.
The accommodation, food and scenery plus great company made this a tour to remember!
