It was good to be back in the Southwest after a 12 month break and although we had to contend with Storm Isha and Storm Jocelyn we managed to see some great birds during our five day tour.
We kicked off in Devon with great views of CIRL BUNTINGS plus other species such as NORTHERN FULMAR, NORTHERN GANNETS, GREAT NORTHERN DIVER, NORTHERN RAVEN before heading west. A stop at a wonderful woodland and wetland area produced MARSH TIT, EURASIAN NUTHATCH, EURASIAN BULLFINCH, GREEN SANDPIPER, GREY WAGTAIL and GOOSANDER.
The next few days were spent in CORNWALL where birding highlights included MERLIN, 17+ PURPLE SANDPIPERS, male BLACK REDSTART, WHITE-THROATED DIPPER, COMMON GUILLEMOT, RAZORBILL, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL and adult RING-BILLED GULL, EURASIAN WHIMBREL, several COMMON KINGFISHERS, COMMON GREENSHANK, MEDITERRANEAN GULLS, YELLOW-LEGGED GULL, LONG-TAILED DUCK and lots more.
We rounded off the tour with another night in Devon and our last morning produced PIED AVOCETS, EURASIAN BLACKCAP plus good numbers of the common wildfowl.
Our final birds of note included good numbers of RED KITES plus around 120 ROSE-RINGED PARAKEETS.
A fine end to a great tour to the Southwest and we look forward to returning in 2025.
